World Humanitarian Day:  Recognising Compassion in the Workplace

Workplace Emphathy

On 19 August every year, World Humanitarian Day is observed across the globe, shining a light on individuals and communities who dedicate themselves to supporting others in times of crisis. The United Nations designates a unique theme for each World Humanitarian Day to focus attention and inspire collective action. In recent years, themes such as, “It takes a village” and, “No Matter What” have emphasised the importance of global solidarity and the courage of those who put themselves at risk to save lives.

World Humanitarian Day 2025 is centred on the theme of “Humanity Unites,” highlighting the power of compassion and collective action, both on a global scale and within our everyday environments, including the workplace.

Compassion at Work

While the day typically highlights international humanitarian efforts, it also serves as an important reminder of how everyday acts of kindness and support can profoundly shape the workplace. When employees feel empowered, respected and valued, they are more likely to practice empathy and understanding with their colleagues.

You don’t need to be on the frontline to make a humanitarian difference. Small gestures go a long way, such as:

  • Offering practical support to colleagues experiencing difficulties.
  • Championing inclusive, wellbeing-focused workplace policies.
  • Listening actively when colleagues want to share their perspectives or concerns.
  • Encouraging a culture of care, openness and respect.

The Impact of Humanitarian Values

Data shows that fostering a compassionate workplace culture delivers meaningful benefits. According to a 2023 survey by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, 75% of employees reported higher job satisfaction in organisations where kindness and inclusion were prioritised. Furthermore, a Gallup study found that organisations with high levels of employee engagement were 21% more profitable than those with lower engagement.

Moving Forward Together

On this World Humanitarian Day, let’s each reflect on how our actions contribute to a more supportive and humane workplace. By embracing the 2025 theme, “Humanity Unites,” we can inspire small, meaningful changes, demonstrating that humanitarian values are not limited to distant crises but can thrive wherever people come together.

Even modest, everyday displays of kindness can have a lasting impact, thereby nurturing an environment where everyone feels seen and supported.
