The festive season is a time of joy, celebration, and togetherness. However, it can also bring its fair share of stress, whether you are trying to navigate the chaos of shopping, preparing large meals for family gatherings, or trying to balance family dynamics. What’s more, the way we experience this time of year can vary significantly depending on where we are in the world, with the Northern Hemisphere experiencing winter and the Southern Hemisphere enjoying summer. As we approach the festive season, let’s have a look at some tips for staying healthy (physically, mentally and emotionally) whether you are feeling the heat, or wrapping yourself up with a scarf and a woolly hat!

Northern Hemisphere – a chilly holiday season

The winter months are here and, as the temperature drops and the days get shorter, we tend to spend more time indoors. As a result, we become less active, and comfort foods become all too tempting.

The cold often means an increased risk of illness, so let’s look at some tips for keeping healthy this winter:

  • Avoid the spread: wash your hands frequently, wipe down regularly touched surfaces (such as kitchen surfaces and door handles) and cover up a cough or sneeze.
  • Annual vaccine: vaccines against seasonal flu and other respiratory illnesses will reduce your chances of contracting them and can also reduce the severity of your symptoms.
  • Healthy eating and drinking: eat a balanced diet that includes plenty of fresh vegetables, fruit, whole grains, fibre and lean proteins to keep your immune system strong and keep hydrated with plenty of water.
  • Stay active: exercise can boost your mood, increase energy levels and improve overall physical health. Try indoor workouts like yoga, pilates or home fitness classes if you’re not keen on braving the cold. Alternatively, winter sports like ice skating, skiing, or even a brisk walk in the snow can lift your spirits.
  • Sleep well: good quality sleep is important if you want to optimise your immune system and sleeping well can also help you fight off infection. Try and stick to a bedtime routine and avoid caffeine or large meals close to bedtime. If you’re celebrating, consider having a light, healthy snack if you are hungry before bed.

Southern Hemisphere – a holiday season in the sun

Summer months mean warm weather, sunshine and plenty of outdoor activities. It is a season that offers countless opportunities to improve overall health and wellbeing.

  • Be sun smart: remember your sunscreen; wear a hat; protect your eyes and take breaks indoors or in a shady area to avoid heat exhaustion.
  • Drink plenty of water: for some flavour, add some frozen berries to your water or even some mint leaves or lemon or lime slices.
  • Limit your alcohol and caffeine intake: Alcohol, fizzy drinks and coffee can leave you feeling dehydrated, which could give rise to headaches and fever, so remember the water.
  • Eat light meals: Heavy meals with large amounts of carbohydrates and fats give rise to a lot of heat in the body, so keep the focus on vegetables and fruit.

Finding Calm moments during the hectic Holiday Season

The holidays can be overwhelming, and so finding moments of calm amidst the chaos can help you maintain perspective. Here are some tips for stress management and healthy socialising that apply equally to both northern and southern hemispheres:

  • Practice mindfulness: incorporate short mindfulness exercises into your daily routine. Whether you take 5 minutes to focus on your breathing, go for a walk, or use guided meditation apps, mindfulness can help you stay present and centered.
  • Set realistic expectations: focus on creating meaningful moments rather than stressing over the details.
  • Take breaks: step away from the festivities when needed. Whether it’s finding a quiet spot for a few minutes or scheduling some “me time” during the day, taking breaks is essential for your mental health.
  • Quality over quantity: you don’t need to attend every event or meet every expectation. Focus on connecting with those who matter most to you.
  • Respect your needs: if you need alone time or space from social gatherings, communicate this with kindness and remember that it’s okay to take a step back and recharge.

During the festive period, it’s easy to get caught up in the stress of trying to ensure that everything is perfect. However, the holidays are a time for joy and connection, not perfection. Shift your focus from doing to being—being present and in the moment with those you love. Here are some tips for enjoying the present:

  • Gratitude practices: take time each day to reflect on the things for which you are grateful. This simple practice can shift your mindset and help you stay grounded in the positive aspects of the season.
  • Slow down: rather than rushing through tasks, take a moment to slow down and appreciate the little things—whether it’s the twinkle of holiday lights or the joy of a shared meal.
  • Create new traditions: whether you are in the Northern or Southern Hemisphere, creating new traditions can help shift the focus from stress to enjoyment. Perhaps it’s a Christmas morning walk, a New Year’s Day swim, or simply taking time to appreciate the beauty of the season.

The festive season, whether in the Northern or Southern Hemisphere, brings its unique set of joys and challenges. By focusing on wellbeing through rest, balanced eating, mindfulness, and social connection, you can ensure that the holidays remain a time of celebration and renewal.
