Talking About Mental Health at Work

Even with greater awareness, stigma around mental health remains a barrier in many workplaces. Employees often feel they cannot be open about their struggles for fear of being judged or seen as “less capable.” This only leads to silence, isolation and a lack of support, which can ultimately harm both employee wellbeing and productivity.
Open conversations are one of the most powerful tools we have. When leaders and employees talk honestly about mental health, it reduces fear and creates a culture of empathy. For managers, it doesn’t mean having all the answers but rather listening with understanding and creating safe spaces for dialogue. Sometimes a simple, “How are you really doing?” can make all the difference.
Colleagues, too, play a role in breaking stigma. Using supportive language, checking in with one another and normalising the reality that everyone struggles at times, helps build a workplace where people feel safe to seek help.
Mental Health Awareness Month is an opportunity to take small but meaningful steps such as attending a wellbeing workshop, sharing your experiences or encouraging your team to participate in Atrium’s wellbeing sessions. Each conversation chips away at the stigma and helps create workplaces where mental health is part of the everyday dialogue.
Atrium’s wellbeing programme is here to support that shift by offering tools and training that empower leaders and employees alike to create healthier and more open environments. When mental health becomes a shared priority, everyone benefits.
