Our client is a renowned Financial Services firm in South Africa, they are seeking a Database Administrator to join their IT Operations team.
Role Purpose
Implementation, maintenance and repair of the databases. monitoring and improving database performance and capacity, assist in planning for future expansion requirements, coordinate and implement security measures to safeguard the database
Responsibilities
Database Administration
• Co-ordinates the effective management of the database environment
• Facilitates best possible system performance from the perspective of the applications and reports using the
databases
• Ensures the Security of data is maintained at all times
• Services any data movement requests securely, accurately and timeously
• Provides support and advice to development team for new and existing SQL code
• Conducts daily routine tasks including Health Checks
• Provides an effective database security management support
• Ensures that backups are done and restored daily
• Sets up new database environments, configure in adherence with applications
• Sets up and maintain SQL mirroring, replication and log shipping
Data Storage Optimization
• Ensures effective database management of files and file groups
• Identifies large tables and archive and/or partition them if beneficial to system
• Assists with the placement of files on correct storage types, as required
• Makes use of SAN technology to support databases (restores, backups and snapshots)
SQL Monitoring and Performance Optimization
• Monitors SQL Server instance
• Identity’s poorly performing SQL code (stored procedures, function etc.)
• Improve code
• Follows deployment life cycle as per Jira
Deployment Access
• Grant deployment access promptly and correctly
• Coordinates with developers
• Communicates deploy status via email (success, roll back, not deployed etc.)
Business Continuity Planning
• Assists with Disaster Recovery planning and deployments
• Assists with configuration of DR environment (database restores, mirroring, application configuration, testing)
Operational Incidents
• Takes care of existing operational incidents promptly and correctly
• Provides an efficient 3rd line support and assists with database related queries
• Documents and accurately updates SOP and escalating processes
• Adheres to company policies and operating procedures
• Adheres to Response SLAs
• Ensures that Incident management is adhered to in accordance with (ITIL
Qualifications
• Management of files and file groups; Table archiving and partitioning
• Identify poorly performing SQL code; SQL DR technologies and SQL Backup and restore
• Strong in MySQL; Strong in System Administration (Windows & Linux), Systems Design
• Proficient technical and SQL troubleshooting skills
• Good understanding of enterprise architecture
• Good knowledge of servers, networks, desktop technologies and server virtualisation
• Change control processes and procedures
• SSIS; SQL Mirroring, replication and log shipping; SQL security administration
• JIRA, Agile Scrum, XP and Kanban methodologies
• Project management principles
• VMWare; CLR
• MS SQL Reporting Services and Analysis Services
• SQL 2012, Red Gate products, SQL Sentry and SQL High availability
Relevant Degree/Diploma in IT or related discipline
Strongly recommended: MCDBA, MCSA: SQL Server and or MCSE: Data Platform
Experience
Minimum 5 years MS SQL DBA experience
